If a new airport is to be built to serve San Diego County, it should SUPPLEMENT Lindbergh Field, not REPLACE it. An airport conveniently close to the vibrant centers of San Diego, including Downtown, Convention Center, Coronado, Old Town, Sea World and Mission Valley is economical, and efficient. Why spend money and resources to scrape a perfectly good and modern airport? Will the $232 million expansion completed just 9 years ago another become bad use of public funds? If Lindbergh Field is replaced by a less central airport, our already overcrowded freeways will be further burdened as thousands of short airport commutes to and from central San Diego are turned into much longer trips. Keeping Lindbergh will reduce the footprint, traffic, and stress required of the new airport thus making it more neighborly and palatable to those living around it. Do not believe the critics who claim that San Diego cannot support two airports. Consider the powerful interests behind this sentiment who are hoping to benefit from developing lindbergh land as well as the uncapping of building height limits under the airport overlay zone that includes much of downtown. Stop another public land grab that always seems to fall short of what is promised.
